Raybeats Its Only a Movie Special Edition

h

This has been one of my favourite albums since I found the original in the $1 bin at 78 Records in Perth in the mid 80s. 78 Records was my favourite hangout a massive store on 2 levels but no actual 78s. I since lost the album along with most of my LP collection and unlike other albums have been unable to find a copy of the complete album on the net. Not only that I can't even find a decent cover scan or track listing. I have found a vinyl copy on a Dutch record mail order site and I am making enquiries.

Anyhow using all available copies of tunes found on the net and scavenged off an old mini disc I have compiled the best version available at the moment along with alternate versions and a couple of other tunes.

Anyhow Twilight Zone is featuring their first album Guitar Beat also out of print and I thought I would share this version also. I much prefer this album to GB. Three or four songs are stonking versions of classics like Jack the Ripper and Mancini's Banzai Run recorded in a garage with a single stereo microphone. The rest were done in a studio with a drum machine they were playing with and while OK they don't live up to the grandeur of the garage tunes. If they'd done the whole album like those 3 or four tracks this would be the GREATEST ALBUM ever made! Even better than the Surfaris Play Wipeout.

I've also included a fun video of Jack the Ripper in the folder. By the way that Chris Rea album in the sidebar has one CD of tunes in the vein of this album (the first one) and I highly recommend it. Don't bother with the other 2 CDs they're just Chris doing his usual crooning thing.

Also go here for the Band's rundown on the albums all unavailable unfortunately.

Track listing:

01. Jack The Ripper
02. Banzai Pipeline
03. Instant Twist
04. The Sad Little Caper
05. Doin' The Dishes
06. Soulsurfin
07. The Big Country
08. Jelly Bread
09. Rise And Fall Of Flingel Blunt
10. Soul Beat-Intoxica
11. It's Only A Movie
12. Calhoun Surf
13. Jack The Ripper (alt)
14. B-Gas Rickshaw
15. Cocktails

So there you have it a labour of love by yours truly.

Hey there, pal. Have you seen that Twilight Zone not only has the first album, but also the first Raybeats EP "Roping Wild Bears" AND "It's Only a Movie" it its entirety? Go check it out! And thanks for your "Special Edition" of IOAM, it gave me a few alternates I didn't have (and the video!), so it was worth it.

I found a flexi-disc of "The Sad Little Caper" in an old Guitar Player magazine years back; always loved their sound and never knew what (if anything) became of them. Thanks for this post.
