Raybeats Extra

Well here it is. As if in answer to a prayer the great Twilight Zone has supplied this album. Over 20 years waiting and here it is! I'll leave my effort up for comparison. I haven't downloaded it yet so I'll report on it after a listen. And there's even a cover scan and track list!

Yep sounds like a good rip. Its never been released on CD so I presume this a vinyl rip and its very clean.

Raybeats Its Only a Movie Special Edition

h

This has been one of my favourite albums since I found the original in the $1 bin at 78 Records in Perth in the mid 80s. 78 Records was my favourite hangout a massive store on 2 levels but no actual 78s. I since lost the album along with most of my LP collection and unlike other albums have been unable to find a copy of the complete album on the net. Not only that I can't even find a decent cover scan or track listing. I have found a vinyl copy on a Dutch record mail order site and I am making enquiries.

Anyhow using all available copies of tunes found on the net and scavenged off an old mini disc I have compiled the best version available at the moment along with alternate versions and a couple of other tunes.

Anyhow Twilight Zone is featuring their first album Guitar Beat also out of print and I thought I would share this version also. I much prefer this album to GB. Three or four songs are stonking versions of classics like Jack the Ripper and Mancini's Banzai Run recorded in a garage with a single stereo microphone. The rest were done in a studio with a drum machine they were playing with and while OK they don't live up to the grandeur of the garage tunes. If they'd done the whole album like those 3 or four tracks this would be the GREATEST ALBUM ever made! Even better than the Surfaris Play Wipeout.

I've also included a fun video of Jack the Ripper in the folder. By the way that Chris Rea album in the sidebar has one CD of tunes in the vein of this album (the first one) and I highly recommend it. Don't bother with the other 2 CDs they're just Chris doing his usual crooning thing.

Also go here for the Band's rundown on the albums all unavailable unfortunately.

Track listing:

01. Jack The Ripper
02. Banzai Pipeline
03. Instant Twist
04. The Sad Little Caper
05. Doin' The Dishes
06. Soulsurfin
07. The Big Country
08. Jelly Bread
09. Rise And Fall Of Flingel Blunt
10. Soul Beat-Intoxica
11. It's Only A Movie
12. Calhoun Surf
13. Jack The Ripper (alt)
14. B-Gas Rickshaw
15. Cocktails

So there you have it a labour of love by yours truly.

Voodoo

This is a request. I have shared this before but I couldn't find it in my Rapidshare files so I've reuploaded it. I ripped this from my own CD copy. It was sourced from vinyl and it had some unacceptable surface noise which I've edited so this is the best sounding version you'll find.

Following are some other Voodoo related shares which I repost here.

One of the very best Exotica albums.

The legendary Xtabay compilations. Voodoos one and two.

Taboo! Bongo! Percussion!

Great percussion album from 1970s studio group. Thats not a drum on the cover by the way.

Legendary bongo sound from Rock n Roll Bongo player Preston Epps. From the fifties. He had a hit with Bongo Rock which appealed to the surf music crowd and was covered many times.

Don't know a lot about this one but sounds like genuine African drum sounds to me.

Baby James

My new grandson. You don't want to mess with him!

This is not the Summer of Love

Not really. Just some choons I thought showed that the influence of the Summer of Love is still felt by some more recent musical groups.

OK so Marshall Crenshaw doesnt really fit but I just love this song. Must mention the Wondermints, yes that is the Eden Ahbez tune and I couldnt believe it when I first heard it but the Wonders can do no wrong in my book and its a great version. They of course kick started Brian Wilson's second coming and when Brian first heard them at rehearsal he commented that they were way better than the Beachboys.

Second Summer

01. Bobby Sutliff -Different World
02. Cosmic Rough Riders - Revolution (In The Summertime?)
03. Marshall Crenshaw - Someday, Someway
04. Orange Humble Band - Way She Moves
05. The Quarter After - Always Returning
06. Teenage Fanclub - Speed Of Light
07. Telepathic Butterflies - Four Leaf Clover
08. The Records - Starry Eyes
09. Tim Lee -Turn Around
10. Utopia - Libertine
11. The Windbreakers - Knowing Me
12. Wondermints - Full Moon

Weekly finds in blogland

I'm featuring new and interesting stuff I've found in the sidebar. Clicking the bottom link goes to my Google Reader page which is like a mini blog but featuring interesting posts I've found. Here is some comments on some interesting stuff.

Lets start then:

Well here's a great find by my favourite soundtrack, lounge and surf instrumentalist Ben Vaughn. He of course composed and performed the soundtrack to Third Rock From the Sun and when I heard the proto surf lounge sounds emanating from my TV I had to follow up on Ben.

I've only managed to find three albums so far by Ben including a deleted CD I found in a bargain bin. Anyhow here it is the best in surf tinged lounge instros. Found at Fat City Cigar Lounge which is a great blog title by the way.

This is a great surf instro group. Again I have three albums by them including a mail order CD I purchased some time ago. One of the very best instro groups surf or not. They've been featured in Guitar Player magazine as one of the great guitar bands. More Shadows influenced they do feature reverb but are in the more melodic Shadows and Ventures mould. Found at Trustar Vibrations a truly awesome site. If only he'd just resize his logo slightly so it fits into blogger's ridiculous framing system (I had the same resizing problem).

From the grandaddy of classic psych rock sharity ChrisGoesRock here is a fantastic album. They sound like the houseband in 60s folk rock heaven invoking memories of classic 60s band like the Byrds and the Charlatans (who looked like everybodys idea of a classic rock band but unfortunately weren't up to scratch musically).

If you only download one album this week make it this one. My only reservation is that its a fairly recent album but maybe any publicity is good publicity.
