World's worst song

Some dude's have compiled what they call the worst song featuring elements that a survey of listeners said were their least favourite elements of a song. Not really a song but a pastiche 22 minutes long its a crazy listen and definitely more interesting than 90% of songs on the radio today (or is that 100%?). It kinda sounds like a lost Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks album outtake with Mrs Miller guesting on Soprano rapping (yes!).

Anyhoo its better than any 50 Cent, U2, Brittany Spears, Paris Hilton or Jennifer Lopez song and just put your worst artist in the space. Oh and they've done a best of song too that's apparently much worse.

Shirley you must be joking...

Paul Troon has kindly given us a link to this fine album. I downloaded it but it seems to be the same as the version I already had. Nevertheless I highly recommend it if you haven't got it. Great groovy sounds from a clean vinyl rip.

A Gringo Like Me

One of the finds on MP3com was a group called Thunderosa. Not surf music they played spaghetti western themes and similar soundtrack sounding material. Some very fine vocals were included one of them being their very good version of A Gringo Like Me from one of the Dollar films. I have never been able to find any info on them through Google although there is a biker grunge group with the same name.
Anyhow here are all 9 tracks I have of their music along with the original versions of some of the tracks and other similar material. For instance Bernstein's El Guapo theme is from Three Amigos of all movies but it fits in fine. Riz Ortolani's Memories of Selena has nothing to do with the Selena track but he's Italian and the tune is great.

Mancini's the man

Here's a little tribute to the master of soundtrack music Henry Mancini. Some of my favourite tunes written by Mancini performed by other artists. You may have some of these versions but I doubt if anyone has them all. Starting with the Monkees or rather probably the Wrecking Crew and a little tribute to Peter Gunn there's some other rarities in there (Unknown Chinese Orchestra for example).

Les Baxter South Pacific

I uploaded this for a request a couple of months ago but some one else met the request. Anyway the file's been sitting in my Rapidshare uploads so I thought I'd share it here for anyone who doesn't have it. Probably no need to describe the album and artist needless to say if you haven't got it get it now.

Remember MP3.Com?

Remember those heady days when MP3.com ruled the roost? This was before blogs ruled the waves and my daily fix was satisfied by the plethora of artists who uploaded single tracks or in some cases whole albums to that site. It was a great synthesis of willling parties sharing their music with eager patrons. As I only had dial up at that stage the low bitrate of 128 suited me down to the ground. In fact MP3.com wouldn't let anyone upload files at a greater bitrate.

My main areas of interest was surf music, ambient and new age music and jangle/power pop. Many great groups were discovered like the Penetrators (surf), Richard Burmer (oustanding ambient/new age artist now sadly passed away) and some great jangle pop artists all now faded from memory. Of course corporate greed took over but it backfired when the blogs took over and shared music anyway whether the artists wanted it or not.

Anyhow I was looking over my archives and I found over 40 CDRs of music most downloaded from MP3.com. I decided to do some compilations of the more worthy of these offering and the first one is here. Nearly all the tracks were found on the said site and I've picked tunes that are melodic and memorable.

Anyway here's volume 1 of the ambient/new age stuff and it sounds as good as I remembered. so do yourself a favour and try it. If there's enough interest and comments I'll do more comps and maybe some featuring single artists only. Don't forget there's absolutely loads of stuff so keep those comments coming.

New Guitar Standards

Just what you've all been waiting for yet another compilation. But wait this is a goodie. Contemporary guitar groups performing instrumental standards. There's surf music, screen themes, exotica and even classical tunes featured. In fact this is the best thing this side of a Tarantino soundtrack. All tunes are volume normalised for your listening pleasure. 40 tunes in two files.
As Steven Strauss has rightly pointed out I should credit the wonderful fortune teller pic which is by an artist named Heather Watts from British Columbia. Her web site is here where you'll find more tiki goodness.
