Deep Blue Sea

I really like Bernard Herrmann's score for the film Beneath the Twelve Mile Reef. Unfortunately the film was really naff.

Anyway rather than share the entire soundtrack recording I've started and finished with two of the best themes from the score and included other tunes which I think reflect the bubbly underwater world. Here it is then with around an hour of great music.

Track list

01. Bernard Herrmann - [Deep Blue Sea #01] The Undersea
02. William Orbit - [Deep Blue Sea #02] Sea Green
03. Paul Ruskay - [Deep Blue Sea #03] Mission 7 - Garden of Kadesh

11. Bersarin Quartett - [Deep Blue Sea #11] Geschichten Von Interesse

Ursula Martinez Hanky Panky NSFW

If you haven't seen this yet this is one great clip. Comedy, magic and stripping combined all to the strains of Mancini's Shot in the Dark and who would believe she's forty plus? Don't watch it if you're easily offended though.

Beyond the Reef

I was looking for some sea related tunes when I realised I had a lot of versions of that moody exotica classic Beyond the Reef. Martin Denny in particular seemed to love the song and did quite a few versions. I've included four of his versions although one sounds like a different song to the original.

Anyway I thought I'd share the versions I have although no doubt there's lots of others.

Futurama remix

Alison wanted a combination of the Futurama theme with J J Perrey's EVA and Pierre Henry's Psych Rock which all sound eerily similar.

I knocked together something, it starts with the Futurama opening theme segues into Psych Rock then a remix of the Futurama theme and finally EVA.

Here it is.

Dave, you're my wife now

Futurama

Well Psych Rock was of course the sixties inspiration for the Futurama theme. Litlgrey gets a cigar for picking that up. Here's the Futurama theme with all those funny opening comments. By the way the two new Futurama films Benders Big Score and The Beast With a Billion Backs are worth seeking out.

Pierre Henry Psych Rock

Can you guess what TV show theme was inspired by this track?

Riding Giants

Watch one minute of this and you're hooked. I had to find a downloadable version when I saw a few minutes of this. It's basically a history of surfing and in particular the chase for the biggest wave.

It all ends up with the biggest wave ever ridden by man using a special board and backup jet skis.

Incredible footage a terrific story, the best surf film I've ever seen and the whole thing is watchable online. Its made my recent purchase of a 42 inch LCD TV worth the money I paid already.

Martin Denny The Versatile

Here's the cover thanks to Paul Troon.

Here's a request Mr Denny's album The Versatile Martin Denny circa 1966 or thereabouts. Mr Denny shows his cocktail piano skills on this disc but there are a couple of nice exotica tracks including a reworking of Quiet Village. No cover for this so instead one of my fave pics of Mr Denny from a couple of years ago.

Tom Dissevelt & Kid Baltan - Song of the Second Moon

We're on a roll folks. Another stellar offering from Paul Troon. I only had some separate tracks from this so I'm downloading this one myself.

Although the single 'Song of the Second Moon' is from 1957 this lp was released in 1967 in Europe. Dick Raaijmakers who worked as an engineer at the Philips NatLab couldn't use his real name, because he was a Philips employee, so he used the reverse of his nickname natlaB diK: Kid Baltan.

He and Tom Dissevelt really were electronic pioneers, they did everything with tone generators and tapes, no keyboards were used.

Bob Thompson On the Rocks

One of the great LP covers of lounge music here's On the Rocks.

Bob Thompson (1924-) has been called "an overlooked genius of American pop music." He is most famous for the Space Age Bachelor Pad records he created in the late 1950s. These one-of-a-kind discs feature a singular sound that evokes cocktail glasses, swingin' guys and gals, and all-night mischief. You might imagine "Austin Powers" or Hugh Hefner putting Bob Thompson records on their hi-fis. The albums include radically rehipped standards and daring originals—spiced up with purring girls, mad percussion, or propulsive Atomic Age sound effects. The hot legs, cocktails, and rocket ships make the Living Stereo LP covers stand out.
Sorry folks Mr Thompson's management has requested I remove this share.

Actually this album doesn't seem to be readily available only some music and not the actual album through itunes. I can't really see why Mr Thompson's management should object but he owns the copyright (I presume) so I suppose he has the right to restrict access as he sees fit. I should have thought the more people that access this music the better.

If you really can't find a copy please email me .

Straight to the moon Alice!

Here's a very nice treat supplied by Trustar of Trustar Vibrations one of my favourite sites. Who would have thought that Ralph Kramden was such a romantic shmoozer? This looks like another Ryden cover too.

This Amazon review sums it up better than I can:

Jackie Gleason was one of the entertainment world's renaissance men. He was an accomplished comedian, actor, arranger, and composer. His music will forever serve as his living legacy. His works set the standard for many of the great musicians who followed, including Mantovani, Mauriat, and others. This CD eloquently captures the soft, sultry, and seductive sounds from an era that was Jackie's alone.

Jackie could not read a note of music, yet he composed and arranged some the of finest music ever recorded in America. He was a gifted artist who could blend the sounds from a crystal-clear coronet, with a simmering sax, soaring strings, and a deep, resonant bass to create an ambiance for romance, reflection, and rapture. From his signature work "Melancholy Serenade" to contemporary classics like "Ruby" and "Misty," the music flows like vintage wine...

Richard Burmer

Here's another sampling of goodies freely available from the old mp3.com. One area of treasures were groups of artists who shared their work including soundtrack/ambient and space music. I discovered some great artists there including Craig Padilla, Ian Boddy, Tom Aragon, Tony Gerber and perhaps the best of all Richard Burmer.

I was going to do a best of Richard's work but I couldn't really choose as I think there's something worthwhile in all his work. Here then is all of Richard's work he generously made available as free downloads on mp3.com and his web site. Unfortunately Richard passed away prematurely in 2006 a sad loss indeed.

His work is eclectic but to my mind goes way beyond what you would think of as New Age. More like soundtracks for the movie of your mind. Standout tracks include A Book on the Crossroads (which I present here as a separate track) and Kingfisher's Day but they're all great.

"Burmer's music has a timeless quality...it grabs and spins you into one of his journeys, and even when it's over, the memories linger like a vapor trail." - Jazziz Magazine

Sunset on Mars

This just in. If you look carefully you can see a mysterious silver spacecraft and a human visage (not!). Its like the Gobi Desert but much colder and without the fun desert vegetation and creatures and stuff.

The reason I'm so cynical about this is that I eagerly await new photos from Mars and I end up disappointed every time. Even the ones in colour look black and white. Inhospitable doesn't really sum it up.

Or are we missing something?

Is Life on Mars boring?

There's a new Mars lander vehicle called Phoenix which is transmitting pictures from Mars. In common with all other pictures from Mars the Martian landscape is shown as a black and white featureless plain less interesting than the Gobi Desert. The only pictures even remotely interesting are the ones showing some part of the lander like a foot or antenna. Does man really think he'll be able to make a viable environment from this dried up mess of gravel and rocks?

Of course the UFO freaks think they can see spacecraft and human faces in the featureless vistas but they are probably caused by grit on the lens or transmission artifacts. Or is NASA holding back on us? It reminds me of a cartoon where the lander is looking out over the usual boring vista and behind the lander unseen is a whole Martian civilization looking like a 1930s Flash Gordon cover.

Anyhow I thought why not do a Mars inspired compilation but taking inspiration from the traditional view of the red planet. It turned out pretty good if I say so myself. Some reasons to download this are music by Tritonus, Tangerine Dream (really!) , Artie Kane's version of Mars Attacks and lots of others.
