Dr Forrest is sharing a twofer of the Del Rubio Triplets (see the sidebar). Intrigued by their rather campy appearance and after listening to their low fi versions of such 'hits' as Devo's Whip It I investigated further.
They came to fame in the eighties due to their campy appeal and the fact they appeared usually in mini shorts and skirts showing off their not bad gams. That wouldn't be too bad except they were well into their sixties at the time. Thank god for soft focus I suppose.
Apparently they all lived together in the same house for many years and always dressed alike and went everywhere together. Unfortunately two of the sisters have passed away leaving one sibling. Not surprising when you consider they were born within minutes of each other in 1921.
Anyway have a look at the above video which gives a good idea of their musical ability and camp appeal. I tried to find a vid of Whip It but am so far unsuccesful although the song is featured on their myspace site.

I hope you intend to pay for the therapy I now need after watching this clip. I'm bleeding from my ears and I blame you.
The Del Rubios were great. I lived in LA through most of the 80s and saw them everywhere. They were the entertainment for a party I attended in 1986 and were a huge hit with the crowd. It was both amusing and unnerving to have women of their "maturity" unleash so much carnality.
As I mentioned over at the Cheeze Factory, their rendition of "Neutron Dance" is classic. They were a unique act, these sisters Del Rubio, and I hope they pick up a few more fans via Xtabay and Dr. Forrest.
Cheers!
Chris
They're unique to say the least and probably would only happen in Hoillywood. I've only been able to listen to a couple of songs so far but it hasn't affected me at all, at all, at alllll.......
They were in a Peewee Herman show, the Christmas Special I believe.
PS Does that OGG app work for Macs?
Hoo boy, I'm not sure this is the first thing I should be listening to on a Monday morning. Definitely for fans of The Shaggs, Pamela Lucia & Whatever Happened to Baby Jane (the movie). I think I'll put this on repeat play and blast it out the window next time my juvenile delinquent neighbors decide to sit out on their lawn with Korn blasting out their window. Thanks.
I wish I could have seen them perform live. I only saw them on "Ellen" and Pee-Wee's Christmas special. From what I've read, they were kind hearted ladies who usually performed for free all over the LA area. They would often perform in nursing homes and other events. Milly is the only triplet that is still with us.
