Good Vibes - Vibraphone Therapy

Definition:

A vibraphone (sometimes called the vibraharp or simply the vibes).

A vibraphone is "a percussion instrument resembling the xylophone but having metal bars and motor-driven resonators for sustaining the tone and producing a vibrato" (source: Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary).

The vibraphone is played by striking the metal bars with mallets of varying hardnesses. The player also can depress a sustain pedal, which allows the notes to ring until the pedal is lifted again.

The vibraphone was invented in the early years of the 20th century and was played by great jazz musicians such as Lionel Hampton and Milt Jackson.

Here's 24 tunes by some of my favourite vibraphonists such as Cal Tjader, Dave Samuels, Arthur Lyman and Milt Jackson. Its my favourite instrument in jazz and to my mind always creates a cool tropical sound.

I thought for a minute you missed Dave Pike, but he' here doing "Jet Set" one of the first jazz albums I bought with my own hard-earned cash as a teenager. Thanks for this comp, oh great Xtabay!

Thanks for your comments Don, whew you bought this stuff in your teen years? I was buying Stones and Beachboys LPs then. I discovered cool stuff like this later in life but now have around 10 Pike albums and didn't have to save any dough.

Mind you I've never seen a Pike album on sale here, the shops are too busy stocking up on the latest Australian Idol compilation albums.

On the way back from Europe last year, I was listening to the jazz channel on the plane's audio system and heard a song. Well, part of a song -- they played it twice and clipped off the end both times, so of course, this stuck in my mind. An unresolved cadence.

I thought it was Cole Porter, because the lyric was clever, and I
thought it was Rudy Vallee, because the singer sounded like he had a megaphone. But a little research showed me to be wrong both times. It was Red Norvo and his orchestra, doing a Hoagy Carmichael song, I Get Along without You Very Well. Terry Allen did the vocals and it was something of a hit in 1939.

Been hooked on the vibraphone ever since. This looks fantastic. Gramercy.

Gary Burton is indeed great but somehow didnt find his way onto the selection. Go to the Good Vibes Blog tho and his classic album Good Vibes is indeed featured.
