Les Baxter - Que Mango

Here's one of Les' later albums but up to his usual high standards and the 101 Strings are along for the ride too.

Berlin School - Electronic Landscapes

Not a Teutonic finishing school its a style of electronic music using mainly analog mainframe synths like the Moog Modular together with early sequencers and then the warm melodic sounds of guitars, keyboards and sound effects to humanise the sound.

It was started in the 70s by pioneers such as Klaus Schultze and most famously Tangerine Dream. Later proponents like Redshift and Ian Boddy keep the form alive but albeit in a quite obscure fashion. It is supposed to be a forerunner of New Age but its much more focused and interesting than that and I think its actually a precursor to ambient artists like Pete Namlook and John Serrie.

Anyway its by far my favourite form of moog and synth music and here's a sampling of old and new artists starting with a theme by Tangerine Dream from their best album Rubycon. Its a later interpretation from the Tangents set but retains the musical qualities of the original.

Los Admiradores - Bongos and other things

There was a request for Bongos Flutes etc so here it is together with Bongo-Drums which has one of the great cheesecake covers.

Both in stereo the first album 320k and the second 192k (with some surface noise but not enough to spoil the listen).

Dick Hyman & Mary Mayo - Moon Gas 1963

As requested here's Dick Hyman's early synth and organ noodlings with Mayo's etheral singing. Only 128k but it sounds pretty good and its a breeze for me to upload and you to download.

Well it look likes nearly all of the above are now available in the post or sidebar. The Happening is a scratchy old copy so unless I get some requests I won't bother with it. It looks like there's enough Hyman available here to satisfy everyone.

Les Baxter - Thinking of You

I was thinking of maybe highlighting some old posts to see if any newer visitors might be interested in them. I could start with some of the most popular ones and then follow up with some less popular albums.

Anyhow I came across this album and it only has 2 downloads so far. I have a feeling I was going to share it but someone beat me to it. Anyway I thought I would post it anyway as any Les Baxter album is well worth having.

Good Vibes - Vibraphone Therapy

Definition:

A vibraphone (sometimes called the vibraharp or simply the vibes).

A vibraphone is "a percussion instrument resembling the xylophone but having metal bars and motor-driven resonators for sustaining the tone and producing a vibrato" (source: Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary).

The vibraphone is played by striking the metal bars with mallets of varying hardnesses. The player also can depress a sustain pedal, which allows the notes to ring until the pedal is lifted again.

The vibraphone was invented in the early years of the 20th century and was played by great jazz musicians such as Lionel Hampton and Milt Jackson.

Here's 24 tunes by some of my favourite vibraphonists such as Cal Tjader, Dave Samuels, Arthur Lyman and Milt Jackson. Its my favourite instrument in jazz and to my mind always creates a cool tropical sound.
